When most of us think of an aircraft we think of the outside of an aircraft that has wings, windshields, engines, and propellers. Inside an aircraft most of us think of the cockpit and the main cabin, but all these places are made up of many different parts.
There are many parts and pieces that make up an aircraft and when you own or fly an aircraft, you know that some of these pieces need to be changed from time to time. Like any type of moving object, the pieces do not move out or simply operate or they do not look good the way they once did. When the parts go bad and there is no need to replace the entire aircraft, instead parts must be purchased and then installed in the aircraft.
As you can assume, there are many different parts of the aircraft that may or may not need to change during the lifetime of the aircraft. When most of us think of part of an aeroplane, we think of seats, seat belt, carpet, overhead bins, and slightly folding tables.
While these are only cosmetic additions to an aircraft they are some pieces of aircraft that take off fairly quickly and need to be replaced. Most commercial airlines have thousands of replacement pieces for each of these things and they can only swap them as needed.
Then there are the exterior parts of an aircraft that many of us think of such as propellers, engines, wings, windshields and tires. These are the parts of aircraft that deal with the elements, and because of this they are often repaired and replaced as needed. All aircraft, especially commercial variants, are inspected to ensure that they meet minimum safety requirements.
During these inspections many items can be found to be disordered and are kept on the ground until faulty or damaged aircraft parts can be replaced or repaired.
There are too many parts of an aircraft that will become defective or simply become outdated that have to be replaced during the life of the aircraft. Some of these items include audio panels, autopilots, HF radios, radar ultimatums, storm scopes, transponders, weather radars and more.
Several pieces of the actual aircraft frame also have to be replaced. Like a mounting piece of your car or any other appliance, it has very few parts and pieces that have to be worn and need to be maintained.
When a part of an aircraft needs to be replaced, the aircraft owner or commercial airline needs a parts dealer. Most commercial airlines stock specific parts that need to be replaced or repaired, but they get these parts from the dealer. Dealers of these parts have pieces ranging from very small to very large, and depending on the dealer you go to, you may find that they are part of the aircraft rather than being any part for any aircraft. Specialise in one or two aspects of parts.
Generally you will find that aircraft parts dealers will specialize in one type of aircraft, allowing you to easily find the dealer and the parts you need.
